The Benefits of Inhaled Insulin

Some of the benefits of Exubera

Exubera, the inhaled insulin recently cleared for mass production by the Food and Drug Administration, is a product of the Pfizer company that offers many benefits over injected insulin.

The many benefits of inhaled insulin like Exubera begin with the lack of resistance from patients.  Many diabetics have been prone to refusing insulin therapy due to the need for daily injections.  With Exubera, it’s a simple matter of emptying a packet of powder into an inhaler roughly sized like a case for glasses and inhaling through the mouth.  The medication is delivered directly to the lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Another benefit of inhaled insulin like Exubera is its appearance in public.  In the past, there has been debate about taking insulin injections in public view.  While patients with other diseases have been free to pop their pills or other medication at the dinner table in a restaurant or out in the open at the mall, insulin-dependent diabetics have been expected to find a private place, such as a bathroom stall, to administer their injections.  The use of syringes in public has simply been considered unacceptable.  The benefit of inhaled insulin like Exubera is that diabetics can now medicate themselves in public without fear of disapproval.

In addition to these benefits of inhaled insulin like Exubera, diabetics will also benefit from the fast action of this new form of the drug.  The fastest acting injectable insulin still requires administration 15-30 minutes before eating a meal.  Exubera’s pulmonary delivery works faster, meaning that it can be taken just a few minutes before an impromptu meal.

In combination with continued injections or long-acting insulin for Type I Diabetics or pill therapy for those with Type II, the benefits of inhaled insulin like Exubera are innumerable.  With time, maybe such drug therapies will replace the use of the syringe entirely.
