Exubera The Future of Insulin Therapy |
||||
|
|
For years, Type I, and even some
Type II, diabetics have been forced to poke and prod at themselves with
syringes to administer the doses of insulin required to maintain a normal
blood glucose level. However,
now, thanks to Pfizer, Exubera is changing the future of insulin therapy.
In the future, it is the hope that
Exubera will replace injectable short-term insulin entirely.
This medical advance could save thousands of lives, as many
individuals up to the present have refused insulin therapy due to fear of
needles or rejection of the idea of injections.
Now, they can live a very normal life with a device that is
publicly acceptable to use. It is uncertain exactly when in the
future Exubera will be available for sale to the public.
It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration at the end of
January, 2006. Projections
expect it to be available by prescription only sometime in July, 2006. Exubera does not replace all
injections; Type I diabetics will still need to inject a long-acting
insulin to maintain an even glucose level throughout the day, and Type II
diabetics will most likely need to continue administration of pills. However, as an alternative to anywhere from one to four shots
daily, Exubera certainly gives diabetics a better lookout for the future. |
