The Future of Insulin Therapy

What is the future for Exubera and diabetics?

Exubera Report

For years, Type I, and even some Type II, diabetics have been forced to poke and prod at themselves with syringes to administer the doses of insulin required to maintain a normal blood glucose level.  However, now, thanks to Pfizer, Exubera is changing the future of insulin therapy.

Exubera is the wave of the future for many diabetics, who no longer wish to take several shots a day.  This form of insulin is inhaled with the use of a device about the size of a glasses case.  The powdered insulin is delivered directly into the lungs (this is referred to as pulmonary delivery) much the way an asthma patient receives therapy.  From there, it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

In the future, it is the hope that Exubera will replace injectable short-term insulin entirely.  This medical advance could save thousands of lives, as many individuals up to the present have refused insulin therapy due to fear of needles or rejection of the idea of injections.  Now, they can live a very normal life with a device that is publicly acceptable to use.

It is uncertain exactly when in the future Exubera will be available for sale to the public.  It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration at the end of January, 2006.  Projections expect it to be available by prescription only sometime in July, 2006.

Exubera does not replace all injections; Type I diabetics will still need to inject a long-acting insulin to maintain an even glucose level throughout the day, and Type II diabetics will most likely need to continue administration of pills.  However, as an alternative to anywhere from one to four shots daily, Exubera certainly gives diabetics a better lookout for the future.

With these advances in insulin therapy, the future of Diabetes is hopeful.  If we cannot prevent the disease by maintaining healthier diets and weights, at least there is more hope for a form of insulin therapy that is acceptable to all who require it.
