8/14/05: A Postponement The Food and Drug Aministration announced that is extending its period of review for Exubera (inhaled insulin) to look over more data submitted by the makers of Exubera.
If Exubera is approved, many diabetics can inhale their insulin instead of injecting it to control blood sugar. This delay will delay the launch of the drug, too. Many diabetics are looking forward to Exubera's approval so they won't have to take daily insulin shots. Nektar
Therapeutics, Pfizer
and Sanofi-Aventis
together are developing and will promote Exubera. Exubera was
recommended for approval by an internal committee of the FDA in September,
and while the FDA doesn't have to follow the recommendations of its
committee, it usually does.
Pfizer
and Sanofi-Aventis
want to make totally sure that diabetics won't have a problem with
decreased lung capacity. In studies, while there was a small
decrease in a patient's lung capacity at first for just a few weeks, the
changes did not get worse over the next two years and went back to normal
if the patient when the patient stopped using Exubera.
If or when Exubera is approved by the
FDA, diabetics just have to inhale Exubera before a meal. It works
like the body's usual repsonse to food and reduces spikes in blood sugar
levels in diabetics. Diabetes is a
disease that's becoming an epidemic. Almost 200 people have it and
in 20 years it could be 300 million. In Europe alone, over 20
million people have diabetes, and type 2 affects 9 out of 10 of those
patients.
