Exubera

Possible Side Effects

What are the side effects of Exubera?

Exubera Report

Exubera is the latest technology available in insulin therapy products.  Though not for sale to the public until mid-2006, it has finally been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as the first marketable inhaled insulin.

As with all new products, potential patients are concerned with any side effects Exubera may produce.  After years of study and clinical trials, it seems that negative side effects from Exubera are extremely limited, and most disappear with continued usage.

One possible side effect of Exubera is a temporary cough.  This cough would be induced upon inhalation of the powder through the inhaler.  It seems that this side effect is caused by irritation of the throat by the powder.  However, this cough seems to last for only a short period as the patient becomes accustomed to inhaling the insulin, and gradually disappears over time.

Another side effect that was noticed during clinical trials was reduced lung functionality.  At first, it seemed as though this particular side effect would be a real obstacle, but after two years of postponing the effort to get approval through the FDA, it was found that this decreased functionality was temporary and non-threatening.  Exubera is still not approved for use by smokers, patients with asthma, or patients with lung disease.

Additionally, side effects of Exubera may include low blood sugar.  As with all insulin, improper dosages can result in over-medication, and episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) can be induced.  Care should be taken, as with all insulin therapy regimens, to be sure that proper dosages are administered, as well as that the patient is within a few minutes of a meal (Exubera is a very fast-acting insulin).

Overall, Exubera is an excellent alternative to several daily injections.  However, as with all new drugs on the market, caution should be taken to heed all warnings and prevent any issues with side effects.
